CiN Weekly 3.18.09 cover

This was an assignment that allowed me to do something a little different. The story was a "recession survival guide," which essentially was tips on how to find a new job after a layoff, save money around the house, how to find free entertainment, etc.

My mind immediately went to a small book my girlfriend's mother got me for Christmas, titled How To Everything (thanks again, Linda!). It's a collection of old-school, duo-toned "how-to" illustrations, covering everything from posture to driving a car to holding a telephone.

After being labeled "The King of (Adobe) Illustrator" a few weeks ago by cartoonist Daryl Collins, I decided to stay away from doing these images as vector drawings. Instead, I inked the drawings by hand, trying to keep them as simple as possible, with minimal detail. Thanks to fellow artist Jamie Rockwell, and to co-workers Amber Samblanet and Tabari McCoy for allowing me to use them as models.
